University of Sydney English Language Test Update 2026: TOEFL iBT & LanguageCert Academic
The University of Sydney has released an important update regarding accepted English language proficiency tests for admission.
Applicants planning to apply for Semester 2, 2026 and onwards should carefully review the latest changes to ensure they book the correct test version.
✅ TOEFL iBT – Accepted Test Version
The University of Sydney currently accepts:
- TOEFL iBT (0–120 score scale)
- This remains the only accepted TOEFL version for meeting English language proficiency requirements.
Applicants must ensure they select the Australia-specific (Legacy) TOEFL iBT version at the time of booking.
❌ TOEFL iBT – Not Accepted
The following version is not accepted:
- New TOEFL iBT (1–6 score scale)
Until further notice, results reported on the 1–6 scale will not be accepted.
The university is reviewing this new test format and will provide further updates once the Department of Home Affairs makes a decision regarding its recognition.
⚠️ Important Advisory for Applicants
If TOEFL results are received on the 1–6 scale, this indicates the applicant did not select the Australia-specific TOEFL iBT version when booking the test.
Applicants must:
- Select the TOEFL iBT Australia-specific (Legacy) test – 0–120 scale
- Carefully verify the test version before confirming their booking
Students who have already taken the 1–6 scale test will need to re-sit the Australia-specific TOEFL iBT (0–120 scale).
Applicants may contact ETS (TOEFL) to request a voucher if required to retake the correct version.
LanguageCert Academic (In-Person) – Now Accepted
The University of Sydney now accepts:
- LanguageCert Academic (In-Person)
- (With some course-specific exceptions)
This update applies to students seeking admission from Semester 2, 2026 onwards.
⚠️ Courses Where LanguageCert Is Not Accepted
LanguageCert Academic is currently not accepted for programs requiring external registration or accreditation, including:
- All pre-registration Nursing courses
- Postgraduate Clinical Dentistry programs
- Master of Clinical Psychology
Applicants to these programs must meet English language requirements according to accreditation standards, and LanguageCert Academic is not listed as an approved test for these courses at this time.
📌 Final Summary
- ✅ TOEFL iBT (0–120 scale) – Accepted
- ❌ TOEFL iBT (1–6 scale) – Not Accepted
- ✅ LanguageCert Academic (In-Person) – Accepted (with course exceptions)
- ⚠️ Some accredited programs have separate English requirements
Students are strongly advised to verify their English test format before booking to avoid delays in their application process.
