Latest Update form Western Michigan University
Western Michigan University (WMU) has announced an important update regarding the format of two of its popular graduate programs. This change will come into effect starting Fall 2026 and is especially relevant for international students planning to study in the United States.
Programs Moving to Online-Only Mode
The following programs at WMU will be offered exclusively in online mode from Fall 2026 onward:
- MS in Exercise Science
- MA in Sport Management
What This Means for International Students
Since these programs will no longer have an on-campus component:
- Western Michigan University will not be able to issue an I-20 for these programs.
- As a result, international students requiring an F-1 visa will not be eligible to enroll in these two programs starting Fall 2026.
Why This Change Matters
International students typically need an on-campus or hybrid program to qualify for an I-20 and obtain a U.S. student visa. Fully online programs do not meet the U.S. immigration requirements for F-1 visa issuance.
Options for Prospective Students
If you are considering these fields of study and plan to pursue on-campus education in the U.S., you may want to:
- Explore alternative on-campus programs at Western Michigan University
- Consider similar programs at other U.S. universities that continue to offer in-person instruction
- Plan applications for Fall 2025 or earlier, if eligible and available
